About
Who writes this, why it exists, and how it makes money. If you're going to take advice from a website about something that matters, you should know those three things.
Who I am
My name is Burak Mahmut Gezer. I built the calculator on this site and the app it belongs to, and I write everything published here.
A friend of mine worked as a guard on a farm. He had lost everything he had to gambling, and there was no food left in the house.
One morning his two-year-old daughter woke up wanting breakfast and he had nothing to give her. He went out to the chicken coop to find some eggs. It was early. The chickens hadn't laid yet.
He sat down in the coop and cried.
I saw him like that, and that is when I started building this.
He quit. What about you?
Why this exists
Sports betting is advertised harder than almost anything else people can lose money on, and there is very little on the other side of it. The apps that take the money are polished, fast and built by large teams. What's available to someone trying to stop is usually a phone number and a lecture.
The specific gap I wanted to close is smaller than "solve gambling addiction." It's this: almost nobody knows what betting has actually cost them. They know the weekly figure and have never multiplied it. That one piece of arithmetic changes how the whole thing looks, and it takes about ten seconds.
That's what the calculator does. The app is for the part after — counting the days, counting the money kept, and having something usable in the twenty minutes when an urge is at its worst.
How this makes money
The calculator and everything written on this site are free, and there are no ads anywhere on it.
The app has a paid subscription. That's the entire business model — no advertising, no affiliate deals with gambling companies, no selling data. I mention the app in articles because that's how the site sustains itself, and I'd rather say that plainly than pretend the recommendations are disinterested.
Where a free tool does the job better than the app does, the articles say so. The comparison piece recommends starting with your phone's built-in blocking, which costs nothing and isn't ours.
What I will and won't write
- No invented statistics. Where a number appears, it's either arithmetic you can check or it's attributed. Most of the maths here runs on your own figures rather than a survey.
- No medical claims. This is a self-help tool. It isn't treatment, it isn't therapy, and it doesn't diagnose anything. Gambling disorder is a recognised condition with real treatment, and some people need that instead of an app.
- No promises about outcomes. Nothing here will guarantee that you stop.
- No lecturing. Everyone reading this has already been told to stop by someone. It didn't work then either.
- Crisis resources stay visible on every page, including the ones where they aren't commercially convenient.
Corrections
If something here is wrong, tell me and I'll fix it and note the change. That applies to the maths, the phone numbers, and anything about how the apps or the law work in your state.
